Why does an Xbox360 get so hot?

I play for like 10 minutes and it's very hot at the back. I got the system yesterday. I don't play for so long because i'm not really enjoying the videogame that came with the system. It cools down in like 5 minutes. Will it overheat or just break if I play for like an hour maybe 2 hours?
