What happened to all the interesting gods?

like they worshipped in ancient greece and rome, big huge gods for every occasion with tons of legends of their amazing deeds.. i could really get behind a religion like that. Has a bit more flavour than the old 'love thy neighbour, worship me or go to hell blah blah', lets sacrifice a chicken to the thunder god before he SMITES you in fuuuuuurious anger! and good old hercules, does anyone else think he was a much better son of god than jesus?
